How the brain learns best
Saturday 20 November 2010, 14:00-17:00
Dr Judy Willis
Dr. Judy Willis practiced neurology for fifteen years before obtaining her Teaching Credential and Masters of Education. She then taught elementary and middle school for ten years in Santa Barbara, California...
Most of the brain (over 85%) responds to input at the involuntary,
automatic level where the responses are often reactive (fight, flight, or
freeze). This workshop will explore the following questions: How does
the brain turn sensory input into memory and useable knowledge? How
can we use brain-research developments to increase attention using
curiosity and prediction? How can learning be propelled through the
brain’s emotional filters to reach the reflective (conscious, cognitive)
brain? How can you use the newest research about mistake negativity
and the brain’s neurotransmitters to engage disenfranchised students?
What can we learn from the video game model to enhance student
engagement and goal setting?
You will hear about and see the latest neuroscience research on
neuroplasticity and the dopamine-reward system. The research will then
be connected with neuro-logical strategies to reverse school negativity
and promote a positive attitude, perseverance through challenges,
and long-term memory by increasing participation, confidence, and
engagement.
